Twenty of them finally poured out into the open street. They quickly split up, coming in at a full run that slowed about ten feet away from us. I watched with a cynical eye, as they spread out in a semi-circle, blocking our path. One of them, judging from the red piping in the dusky brown uniform he wore, was the Squad Captain. He advanced a step in front of his men. “We have detected someone with magical abilities. Hand them over immediately, and your lives will be spared.”

Oh please. Spare me the lies. Without any encouragement on my part, Night took a step forward, drawing the captain’s eyes to me. I straightened to my full height, looking down at him coldly. “I am Rhebengarthen, Earth Mage and child of the Jaunten. Who are you to stand in my way?”

Cons: perhaps the main character is a bit too infallible. The king agrees with to many of his actions that I would deem questionable.

Pros: the Author put together a nice blend of power struggle, unique world building, and intercharacter relations. It was a fun read that kind of peeked my mischievous side and leaves me wondering what will have next.

Jaunten Advent Mage Cycle Book 1 eBook Honor Raconteur Reviews

Very imaginative world but the hero just gets one new power/gift/admirable trait (which are not subtly introduced but pounded over your head) after another. There is no real conflict (although I couldn't finish the book which is unusual for me - and I did try) just situations that show off the overwhelming powers (that are totally unique to the hero) and flawlessly admirable personality traits of the protagonist. This book reminds me of a superhero picture my kindergartner drew where the superhero took up 90% of the page and had a million superpowers and the villain was tiny and weak - cute for a 5 year old - I expect more from a book though.
What do you do when you really want to read a good book and can;t find one? I know what I do. I go back to my favorite authors, pick one And reread one of my favorite series. So far I have read the Advent mage series 7 times. Yes it's that good. Great world building and I love how the characters interacted with each other. If you like fantasy you won't find a series better than this!
Coming back to reread for the third time, and realized I never left a review. The world building is fantastic and Honor has an incredible talent with writing. It's a fantasy novel that's not based around violence! A great rarity, and even better for it.

If it's your first read through, keep going. The series has it all, including action and adventure, unforgettable characters and a story that keeps bringing me back.
The characters are believable. The protagonist has amazing power - but a moral compass to point it. There is no one, single, absolute evil character. There are evil things that are happening... but we get the idea that the people behind these events aren't evil, they're misguided. And there's hope that things can change. And the story is so much the better for it.

The pace is perfect. Any faster, and we'd have lost critical descriptions and character development - and there are no dead spots.

The amount of character development is perfect. Maybe I've just been reading really crappy books, but this one is outstanding to me. If you like YA Fantasy, this has to be on your list - it's among the best I've read.
Hmm, Since i received my I have probably read close to a 1000 books. Of those i've read i've written 4 reveiws. READ THIS BOOK. This has everything going for it, characters, humor, story. I was 30% into the book and my wife kept asking me what was so funny, so i quoted some of the funniest parts, then told her i was sorry she was eating at the time and then helped clean up the mess, she was laughing so hard. This author makes the mundane so funny and the situations so real, you want to be there with them. 50% into it, I told her i would be so mad if it ended with this one book. Please give this novel a chance. It has everything you can posibly want. Yes, its not earth shattering, but by all the publishing gods out there, this is a really good READ. If you like to read, if you like to feel the characters and wish you were there too, READ THIS BOOK. I have to go now and buy the rest of the series, but my whole feeling behind this review is that this is an author we have to support. You wont be disappointed,
A pleasant story of a very nice man who happens to be the most powerful Earth Mage and the first Mage born in two centuries. He was escaping from his country when he encountered a grievously wounded person who exchanged blood with him and made him into a Jaunten. Unfortunately, the story did not provide all that much information about Jauntens, a peculiar situation given that the book is entitled Jaunten. The story is also a bit simplistic in its division of the world into nice people and evil people but it is enjoyable and hard to put down. In the beginning, I thought that the book was going to be another copycat story of Harry Potter going to school. However, he got out of school quickly and began to do this work as an Earth Mage.
Charming light fantasy for younger (or older!) persons. The writing style is a bit reminiscent of decent amateur fan fiction, and there are any number of stylistic and/or technical choices that reinforce that, but..overall I rather enjoyed it. Lately I've run across a number of books that commit any number of (sometimes horrific) literary sins but are surprisingly fun reads anyway. The is another, and the writing improves rather slowly but steadily with the later books. Best of all? it avoids the current fad for uber dark, horrific trauma-fic. The author doesn't dwell lovingly on awful bits, or drag you thru their psych issues (looking at you, PS Power!). It's fun fluff, and that's gotten hard to find. The author *doesn't* resort to implausible or stupid choices by characters out of authorial laziness, and that's really hard to find these days. They put the time in to figure out a plot that worked without the cheats so common (esp in screenwriting). I am glad I bought it, even if I think the series is all a bit overpriced. So, don't expect too much, but don't rule out the possibility that it might be a perfectly decent bit of work.
Cons perhaps the main character is a bit too infallible. The king agrees with to many of his actions that I would deem questionable.

Pros the Author put together a nice blend of power struggle, unique world building, and intercharacter relations. It was a fun read that kind of peeked my mischievous side and leaves me wondering what will have next.
