Alice Hegan Rice was a wildly famous author from Louisville, Kentucky at the turn of the century. "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" was released in 1901, and it became the second best selling book of 1902. Rice also started the Cabbage Patch Settlement House (the same area of town the book depicts) for undeserved children which still exists today. The story was so popular it was adapted for the screen four times and also adapted for the stage.

"Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" is a magical little book. I have not read many authors from Louisville that have written about my city so this is special. This little book makes you reassess life and to be happy for what you have. This will be a book I revisit over and over I think. Rice has written many splendid books but it all started with this one. Wonderful read!

I have had a copy of this book since I was a child and have always loved it. i wanted to give a copy to a friend so I was delighted to see it is still in print.
This is a wonderful humbling tale that provides insight to the human experience, while building vocabulary usage. The story is poignant without becoming maudlin. It demonstrates what it is to be sympathetic and compassionate, not just to feel those emotions. It's about love in action, through very practical and humble means. Please, read it through to the very end and then read it with your children. Encourage your older children to read it themselves and report their thoughts to you. It makes for a wonderful family discussion, too!
Was reading another book that made reference to this one. I recall having a teacher read Mrs Wiggs to us and then subsequently reading it for myself. Enjoyed it just as much today as I did over 35 years ago. The world would be a better place if there were a few more Mrs Wiggs around. Such a
charming story.
A childhood favorite, I indulged myself with a copy. Still love it.
This was one of the first books I got at Christmas when I was about 8. I loved the book and read it several times. I had since lost my copy (to a flooded basement). I bought it for my kindle and enjoyed reading it again.
This is my childhood favorite. It teaches kids that we don't have to have STUFF to be happy, that we feel better when we do things for others and think less about what we need/want, that there is value in everyone and that families really DO love each other and endure, no matter what. Mrs. Wiggs is the original Positive Thinker! She teaches her children about honor, virtue and purpose in life. This is a great story. I recommend that you buy it for your children...and then sit down and read it with them.
This is a very heartwarming book. It takes place in Louisville, Kentucky and shows what it was like for many unfortunate families living at that time.
